A Set of Methods for Research on Work Teams

Abstract

This report describes a set of instruments that can be used in research on the effectiveness of work teams in organizations. The instruments are based on an action-oriented model of group task effectiveness. They were developed as part of a research program in which multiple methods are used to assess the performance-relevant characteristics of work teams and their organizational contexts. The instruments are: (a) a guide for conducting observations of work team in situ, (b) an interview protocol for use in obtaining group members' own assessments of their team and the surrounding organization, and (c) two questionnaires (one appropriate for group members, one for nonmembers) that assess member perceptions of the variables in the group effectiveness model. Copies of all instruments and their manuals scoring keys are appended.
