Improved Graphite Fiber.

Abstract

The purpose of the program was to develop a production method for improved graphite fibers. A goal of 750 x 10 to the 3rd power psi tensile strength at 60-65 x 10 to the 6th power psi modulus was set for the program. Improved 3-4 micron diameter boron strengthened graphite fibers were successfully prepared from Courtaulds SAF polyacrylonitrile fiber precursor in a pilot production plant which has the potential capacity to produce 1 lb/hour of graphite fiber. An average tensile strength of 550 x 10 to the 3rd power psi at the 60 x 10 to the 6th power psi modulus level was achieved through a preliminary optimization of the plant processing conditions.
