Investigation of Hole Preparation and Fastener Installation for Graphite/Epoxy Laminates.

Abstract

The object of this program was to determine the effect of various hole anomalies on the static and fatigue strength of graphite/epoxy laminate and to determine the effects of installing production fasteners in graphite/epoxy laminates. Static tests at room temperature and 250 degrees F with dry and wet (1% moisture) specimens indicated that only interply delaminations caused a significant strength reduction. Fastener installation tests showed blind bolts and solid rivets caused installation damage and that blind rivets, threaded rivet pins, and pull type lock bolts did not show installation damage.
