Coding for Correlated Sources with Unknown Parameters.

Abstract

A number of problems in source coding deal with a pair of correlated discrete memoryless sources and two separate non-cooperating encoders, such as the Slepian-Wolf problem, the side-information problem, and thr Wyner-Ziv problem. In these problems it is desired to determine rate pairs which allow the outputs of each of two sources to be reproduced at the decoder with some specified distortion. If the joint distribution of the outputs of the two sources is completely known to both encoders, then solutions to these problems are available in the literature. Here the situation in which the joint distribution is not completely known is considered. (Author)
