An Analytical Approach for Assessing Vulnerability to Counterfire.

Abstract

An analytical approach for assessing the vulnerability of an artillery battery in terms of the probability that the battery receives counterfire is developed. This approach is based on a simplified model that estimates the probability of detection by indirect fire weapons locating systems of artillery weapons firings, and on recent work by the Mitre Corporation in determining probabilities of counterfire on the basis of battery exposure times and enemy counterfire response times. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the approach, and parametric variations are performed to investigate the impact of changing tactics and weapons characteristics. (Author)
