Acquiring Expertise.

Abstract

This report reviews the roles played by knowledge and automatized skill in expert performance. Special attention is given to the importance of initial problem representations in expertise and to capacity limitations that make using such initial representations difficult at intermediate levels of skill. The role of strategy in skilled performance is discussed in light of the especial importance of domain specific knowledge to expertise. Suggestions are made for development of a theory of coaching based upon emerging cognitive psychological principles of expertise. (Author)
