Obstacles to Private Sector Activities in Africa,

Abstract

This report identifies and analyzes the fundamental constraints, both visible and perceived, which inhibit the development of private sector activities in Sub-Sahara Africa. The findings are based on research conducted over a ten-month period in which the principal data were obtained through in-depth interviews with approximately 150 respondents in Africa, France and the US. Four African countries were selected for concentrated analysis: the Ivory Coast, Kenya, Zimbabwe and the Sudan. The data were analyzed around specific issues, concentrating on those factors which are applicable to private sector activities in the African continent generally. Documentary research also was undertaken to integrate past research efforts and official government analyses with the current data.
