Scintillation Analysis of Gamma Radiation with Crystals of Bismuth Germanate.

Abstract

This report provides an introduction to the theory of scintillation counting and analysis of nuclear radiation, with particular attention to an application for bismuth germanate (Bi4Ge3O12), or BGO, scintillator crystals. Radiation damage experiments using 100 MeV electrons from a linear accelerator were conducted to evaluate the induced radiation and subsequent resolution capability of bismuth germanate and thallium activated sodium iodide scintillators. It was shown that BGO has a much higher resistance to radiation damage from electron and photon activation sources.
