Cultural Resources Survey of Council Grove Lake, Kansas.

Abstract

From October of 1979 until May of 1980, an Executive Order 11593 Survey was conducted for cultural resources in Council Grove Lake. Data was compiled on 17 archeological sites which were previously reported and in addition, 13 new sites were discovered. Of these new sites 5 were prehistoric while 8 are historic; the earlier sites were prehistoric. One site, 14M0304--the William Young--is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately because the prehistoric sites were mostly shallow and have been extensively plowed out or have been badly damaged or destroyed by construction activities associated with the Lake, no other prehistoric sites are proposed to be nominated to the Register. In addition, the historic sites are all too young--under 21 years--to be nominated to the Register. (Author)
