Frequency Domain Design of Multiband Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters Based on the Minimax Criterion.

Abstract

It is well known that in applying minimax criteria for the frequency domain design of finite impulse response digital filters, the use of 'don't care' regions can lead to the occurrence of undesirable resonances in the transition bands of the multiband designs. Rabiner et. al. showed how this effect can be eliminated by modifying the choice of design parameters, although their approach did not attempt to reformulate the design technique. The present work presents a modified design technique in which the desired function is specified also over the transition and the minimax optimization is carried out over the entire band. Four example filters of Rabiner et. al. are used as examples to illustrate this modified technique. Theoretical results relating to the design technique are also presented. (Author)
