Seismological Discrimination and Yield Determination Research

Abstract

This report summarizes research activities during Fiscal Year 1979 which were directed toward the development of improved methods for discriminating between the seismic signals from earthquakes and explosions and the development of improved methods for estimating explosion yield. Empirical, theoretical and experimental studies were completed in seven topic areas: Source Calculations, Discrimination, Body Wave Magnitude and Yield Determination, Small-Scale Experiments, Data Processing Analysis, Ground Motion Analysis, and Selected Geological Studies. The major projects in each of these topic areas are summarized. Also presented is an Appendix listing the abstracts of all reports submitted to the Vela Seismological Center since May 1975.
