Economic Impacts of Increased Defense Spending

Abstract

There is much debate about the relative performance of the economy when resources are diverted from private sector and Federal Government nondefense programs to the defense sector. To shed light on this issue, an analysis of the economic consequences of various levels of real defense expenditure increases over the next 5 years was conducted. Annual increases of up to 10 percent were studied to assess sensitivities to the size of the increase. This paper summarizes our findings, considering both macroeconomic and microeconomic impacts of the overall defense budget and M-X spending in particular. The findings discussed are based on an analysis of five major econometric studies about the impact of defense spending.
