Life-Cycle Cost Database. Volume I. Design.

Abstract

This report documents research conducted to design life cycle cost (LCC) databases for selected building systems. These databases would be used by designers to compute LCC costs for design alternatives, installation and District personnel to generate maintenance and repair (M&R) data to justify new construction versus modification of existing facilities, and planners in the Office of the Chief of Engineers to provide summarized M&R cost data for various types of facilities. Databases were designed for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems, roofing surfaces, interior finishes, and exterior finishes. When the data for them have been developed, they will be ready for use in actual projects. The feasibility of using analytical methods to develop information for LCC databases was investigated. The analysis showed that use of Engineered Performance Standards is the best way to obtain the data. Volume II of this report provides sample data development for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems, floor covering systems, and cooling generating systems.
