Baseline Data. Volume 1. Likelihood of Occurrence (One or More Times) of Information-Seeking or Error Events Under Different Task Conditions
Abstract
Data on occurrence of information seeking and performance errors are presented for track and wheel vehicle mechanics classified by amount of prior task experience. Within this framework, information seeking behaviors are identified by type of information source used and type of information sought in relation to characteristics of the task performed. Error data is similarly displayed for type of performance error in relation to presence or absence of information seeking during the task performance and characteristics of the task performed. These data are based on unobtrusive observations of US Army mechanics performing their usual duties at their normal work sites. These observations were restricted to organizational-level motor pools and to mechanical repair tasks on vehicles in the M151 jeep series, M35 2 1/2-ton truck series, M54 5-ton truck series, M113 armored personnel carrier series, and M60 tank series. Observers recorded the mechanics' performance in a step-by-step fashion, when information was sought during the performance and the errors made during the performance.
