Estimation of the Concentration of a Photon-Emitting Gas in an Extended Source,

Abstract

Equations are derived, within the framework of geometrical optics, that relate the photon flux at a detector to the concentration of an emitting gas contained in an extended source of rectangular cross section, for two optical arrangements that have been used experimentally. Since the ratio of the experimental detector signals for the two quite dissimilar cases is in agreement with that predicted theoretically, the methods are validated. A method is described for maximizing the signal at the detector, using a given lens, which may be applied to an extended source of general cross section. (Author)
