Frangible Microwave Landing System (Inverted Azimuth Waveguide Array Configuration).

Abstract

This final report concerns a feasibility study of the increased frangibility of Microwave Landing System equipment mounted on the extended runway centerline and as assessment of the FAA requirements in regard to frangibility. As described herein, a conceptual design known as the inverted AZ array was developed and fabricated as a mechanical prototype. The primary structural components of the antenna are vertical cantilever waveguides and frangible joints incorporated into their base. Impact and static load tests proved that several joint designs meet the FAA requirements for frangibility. (Author)
