Design Guidelines for the User Interface to Computer-Based Information Systems

Abstract

The user-system interface (USI) to computer-based information systems can require a sizable investment in software design. In current practice there is still no coherent methodology for design of USI software, but efforts to establish design guidelines are continuing. This report revises and enlarges previous compilations of guidelines, and proposes a total of 580 guidelines for design of USI software in six functional areas: data entry, data display, sequence control, user guidance, data transmission, and data protection.
