Required Operational Capability (ROC) Number MOB 1.12 for an Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB).

Abstract

An Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB), with a span of 60ft (18.29m), capable of supporting tracked and wheeled vehicles of up to military load class-60, is required to meet the assault gap crossing needs of the Fleet Marine Force (FMF). The AVLB will be used as a rapidly employable, short-gap, assault crossing bridge, capable of spanning road craters, anti-tank ditches, partially blown bridges, railroad outs, canals, rivers and ravines up to 60ft (18.29m) in length. The AVLB fulfills this requirement for assault crossings where air or ground superiority has not been attained. The AVLB will be carried and launched from the chassis of the M48A5 or M60A1/A2 battle tank (minus turret), the selection of which will be determined by availability, costs and other considerations at the time of procurement. The desired Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for this equipment is FY89. (Author)
