Soldier Dimension in Battle. Volume I.

Abstract

This report outlines measures of soldier/unit effectiveness (System Performance Measures) and indicates that ARTEP is the best measure of unit effectiveness while SQT is the best measure of individual soldier performance. It proposes a conceptual model of the soldier dimension with the eight major factors of Individual, Group, Organization, Leadership, Situation, Stress, system and time. Detailed breakdowns of these factors are given. It then discusses individual, group and leadership characteristics important in peace, transition and combat, and makes recommendations as to leadership, personnel, training and modelling actions that could be undertaken to improve soldier performance.
