Structural Element Testing and Real Blade Impact Testing. Volume II.

Abstract

This report contains all of the unexpanded strain and strain rate results of an experimental program concerned with performing nonrotating bench impact tests on test specimens ranging from simple cantilevered beams and plates to real fan blades. This study was carried out under Task VI 'Structural Element Tests' which is part of the overall program 'Foreign Object Impact Damage Criteria.' Three types of blade materials, geometries, and sizes were investigated using ice and substitute bird material as the impactors. The fan blades investigated were the J79 using 403 stainless steel material, the F101 blade using 8A1-1Mo-1V (8-1-1) titanium, and the APSI metal matrix blade material of boron/aluminum.
