Cultural Reconnaissance of Manele Bay Dredged Material Disposal Site Palawai, Lani Island, Hawaii,

Abstract

The topography is generally rocky coastal slope on a solid volcanic substrate with sporadic areas of loose, soft, alluvial and aeolian soil fill. Several areas appear to have been disturbed previously be dragging, and several bulldozer cuts and a jeep road are apparent. Vegetation consists of kiawe as the dominant flora, with 'ilima (sida fallax) and koa-haole (leucaena glauca) nearer the coast. A few stands of klu (acacia farnesiana) were encountered. The entire area is covered by a dry grass. Fauna consists of pheasants, wild pigs, goats, and feral cats. No archaeological surface remains or artifacts, either prehistoric or historic, were found within the project boundaries.
