Cultural Resource Inventory and Evaluation of Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois.

Abstract

The project described in this report had three main objectives: 1) to survey the REARM area at Rock Island Arsenal to determine whether significant cultural resources would be impacted by construction, 2) to conduct an architectural inventory of standing structures to support a revision of the National Register nomination form for the Island, and 3) to conduct a cultural resource inspection of the remainder of the island. The investigation consisted of documentary and archival research, field survey of approximately 130 acres of relatively undisturbed land (including limited testing where appropriate), and specific verification of previously reported sites with an evaluation of their natural register potential. An inventory of all pre-1930 buildings and enumeration of those eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a part of an historic district for certain parts of the Island was also accomplished. Multiple resources nominations were made for some historic structures that were determined to be of historic, but not architectural, significance. Only two prehistoric sites were recommended for determination of National Register eligibility, although more intensive survey than was possible will be required to understand fully the pattern of prehistoric utilization of the island.
