The Federal Role in Fostering University-Industry Cooperation.

Abstract

Closer links between universities and industry in research and education can enhance technological innovation, and Federal involvement has been an important factor in fostering university-industry cooperation. GAO initiated this review in response to increasing congressional interest in fostering closer links between the two sectors. The report develops information and guidelines to enable policymakers to assess whether new or revised Federal initiatives are needed and how they could be designed to assure that expected outcomes are consonant with policy objectives. GAO selected three types of university-industry collaboration for study: Research parks; Cooperative research centers; and Industrial extension services. (Author)
