Reciprocal Neural Pathways and Associative Networks.

Abstract

This report of covers four separate but related topics. The first concerns the suggestion that dendritic spines may twitch -- that is, change shape rapidly. This has already been published and appears as Appendix A. The second concerns the patterns of long-range connections in the visual cortex. This also has been published and is reproduced as Appendix B. The third topic concerns the problem of memory storage at higher levels in the cortex. This is in an preliminary stage and only a very broad account is given here. The fourth topic is the most speculative and concerns the function of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep and the nature of dreams. A draft paper on this is reproduced as Appendix c. The body of the report gives brief accounts of all these topics and shows how they are linked together.
