Evaluation of Buried-Cable Deterioration at Guam, Mariana Islands.
Abstract
Sporadic breaks were occurring in buried, neoprene-jacketed, four-wire no.-14 AWG cables at the U.S. Naval Communcations Area Master Station (NAVCAMS), Guam, M.I. These cables conveyed the safety-interlock signals to three operational antennas. It was determined that the probable cause of these breaks was seawater contact with the copper conductors and subsequent corrosion. How the sporadic contamination occurred could not be determined.
