Australia and New Zealand: Our Pacific Partners.

Abstract

This essay discusses the ANZUS alliance and its impact on the security interests of the South Pacific region. The study details the historical background which created the ANZUS pact as well as the social, economic, and political climates of today which stress that alliance. In addition, the current and projected defense structures of Australia and New Zealand are examined to determine their impact on the validity of a Pacific deterrence and a South Pacific security structure. Finally, the role of the US in the future of the alliance is examined.
