An Evaluation of Grid Name Sets for Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD).

Abstract

The Short-Range Air Defense System (SHORAD) grid system used in Army air defense as an alternative to GEOREF position was evaluated in regard to the names assigned to the 400 grids. Five criteria in which the present system is lacking were identified which may deter the soldier from quickly and accurately locating a SHORAD grid position. An alternate grid name set was formed by following the five identifed criteria. An experiment was conducted as a partial comparison of the two grid name sets on accuracy and response time. Twenty male and four female Army enlisted personnel listened to recorded grid names via simulated radio communications channel, a response was timed and measured for accuracy. Errors were further broken down into confusion pairs. Although data comparison indicated no overall difference between grid name sets, there were substantial differences among individual grid names. A hybrid set of grid names was formed by combining the best grid names from the two original sets. Selection of names for the hybrid set was based on four of the five identified criteria plus the empirically concluded that the hybrid set should provide a system which minimizes verbal transmission errors.
