The Army's Activities in Artificial Intelligence/Robotics,

Abstract

A historical summary of the Army activities in artificial intelligence and robotics (AI/R) in the last one and one-half years indicates Army interest in AI/R from the laboratories to the Secretariat. Numerous funded and unfunded efforts are now planned by the laboratories even though AI/R technologies lack maturity necessary for autonomous battlefield systems in the 1990's. The potential applications of AI/R systems to Army needs appear to be limitless. DARCOM and TRADOC have prioritized AI/R requirements and plans for five high priority Demonstrators have been prepared. These demonstrators reflect the need to get started with today's technologies. Technological enhancements provided by additional research and development can provide additional autonomy in product improvement phases of the system development cycle. (Author)
