Adaptive Methods and Error Estimation for Elliptic Problems of Structural Mechanics.

Abstract

The authors develop a class of feedback finite element methods for a one dimensional boundary value problem and state some mathematical results about their optimality with respect to various performance measures. Analogues ideas and results are discussed for a two dimensional problem from plane elasticity. A post-processing technique aimed at computing the value of a functional with high accuracy is also described and illustrated by an example. (Author)
