1/5 Size VHS Series Blast and Shock Simulations

Abstract

The simulation objective of the 1/5 Verifiable Horizontal Shelter (VHS( test series was to demonstrate the capability of a High Explosive Simulation Technique (HEST) simulator to adequately duplicate complex airblast waveform loadings. A principal feature of the HEST design was the requirement to produce double-peaked resultant overpressures. The modeling baseline was established by a test (D-1) producing dynamic flow. The HEST test (Sh-1) comparably matched the loading waveforms both in relative magnitude and phase chracteristics. The HEST simulator has proven its utility for both multiple shock effects and multi-pressure loadings on reflection and drag sensitive structures.
