Lightweight Composite Tow Bar

Abstract

This program was initiated to develop a lightweight military standard heavy duty tow bar manufactured from organic composites. A tow bar weighing 125 lbs (vs 340 lbs for standard tow bar) was successfully designed and fabricated from graphite reinforced epoxy tube adhesively bonded to lightened steel and fittings. A kevlar overwrap was utilized over the graphite epoxy tubes to prevent cutting and damage.
