Norfolk Lake Highway Bridges, Baxter County, Arkansas, White River and Tributaries, North Fork River, Arkansas Foundation Report.

Abstract

This report describes the foundation conditions and unique methods utilized in constructing the foundations for two large highway bridges over lake Norfolk, Arkansas, to replace two ferry crossings on U.S. Highway 62 and Arkansas State Highway 101. Twenty-two of the two-columned piers were constructed in water up to 170 feet deep, with each column installed on 8'4 diameter rock-socket footings drilled in a minimum of 20 feet into competent rock. Each drilled socket was inspected, logged, and mapped by means of a specially designed underwater television camera and monitoring screen. The founding dolomite rock was for the most part sound, with occasional close to moderate fractures. Solution cavities, typical in dolomite, were encountered in several of the rock sockets. Since the majority of this work was performed in an existing fresh water lake it was a requirement to collect, separate, and dispose of drill water and cuttings without disturbing the ecological balance in the lake. The drill water was filtered through two barrier of Bidum C-42 fabric and cuttings were barged to land disposal sites. (Author)
