Gazetteer of El Salvador,

Abstract

El Salvador, smallest of the seven republics located between Mexico and Colombia, is bordered by Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Pacific Ocean. This gazeteer contains about 7,750 names for places and features in El Salvador. The entries in the gazeteer include names approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and unapproved variant names. The approved names in this gazeteer supersede those contained in previous BGN gazeteers or in other Defense Mapping Agency publications for the area. Research for this publication was completed in May 1981. The basic name coverage corresponds to that of maps at the scale of 1:100,000. Entries include the names of first-, second-, and third-order administrative divisions; populated places of all sizes; various other cultural entities; and a variety of topographic and hydrographic features.
