1,2,4-Butanetriol: Analysis and Synthesis

Abstract

Techniques have been developed for routine analysis of 1,2,4- butanetriol (BT) and related compounds, and a number of contaminants in commercial BT have been identified. To determine the nature and levels of contaminants that adversely affect the nitration process, trial nitrations have been run simulating actual conditions in the continuous nitration facility at the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head. Purification techniques were examined to improve the quality of commercially obtained BT, and several processes for BT synthesis were studied.
