Cultural Resources Literature Search and Records Review - Upper Mississippi River Basin. Volume 8. Pool 7.
Abstract
This literature search and records review of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (River Mile 857.6, above St. Anthony Falls, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minnesota to Lock & Dam 10, (Guttenberg, Iowa) was authorized by the St. Paul District Corps of Engineers as part of its master plan for the 9-foot navigation project. The objectives of the investigation were to: 1. conduct a comprehensive review of existing records and review published and unpublished literature; 2. provide an evaluation of recorded cultural resources; and 3. prepare a detailed technical and popular report. Site-specific information was compiled for both historic and prehistoric sites from state agencies in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and from various local and regional institutions. More than 1,000 historically or architecturally significant sites and districts, and more than 1,400 prehistoric archaeological components were recorded and plotted on base maps. From the site configurations and from other data collected during the course of the records and literature review, a narrative framework for the interpretation of historic and prehistoric sites was developed. Recommendations to enhance the management of the archaeological and historical data base were provided. Investigation of archives and literature relating to Pool 7 resulted in the identification of a single bridge that has been nominated and accepted for the National Register of Historic Places. The total historic/architectural site inventory numbers only 37 locations. Archaeological sites, based on the current available data, are more numerous in Pool 7 environs. A total of 97 sites are listed in various archival and literature sources. (Author)
