Representing and Displaying Information for Tactical Decision Processing

Abstract

One of the main tasks required in developing user-compatible systems is the specification of criteria for the development of algorithms that search for, classify, and order the display of chunks of tactical information such that they are meaningful to the decision maker. The aim of this study was two-fold: to investigate the effects of the sequential displaying of chunks on the assimilation of tactical information; and to determine the effects of presenting a tactical scenario as a member of a sequence of scenarios on chunking. Two experiments were designed and conducted. The general procedure was to utilize battefield scenarios to be reconstructed and copied under varying conditions of presentation and viewing by a select group of battlefield commanders (participants).
