USAWC Military Studies Program: Engineer Directions: Airland Battle 2000.
Abstract
This study reviews the present trends of the US Army to the year 2000 and derives from these the implications for engineers on the AirLand Battlefield of 2000. The functions of Mobility, Countermobility, Survivability, General Engineering and Topography are considered in the environment of the ALB 2000 with attention to the resources, constraints, and tactics of the battle. The conceptual foundation of the engineer tasks is reviewed, together with their doctrine, organization, training, and materiel. From the implications derived in this review, a foundation for equipping the future engineer may be defined, and given the proper analysis, programmed and budgeted. It is this latter task that we have not endeavored to do, leaving that task to the engineers of the Class of 1984.
