Space Shuttle External Interference Heating Test

Abstract

Interference heating data were obtained on the 0.0175 scale 60-OTS integrated Integrated Space Shuttle Vehicle in the AEDC Aerothermal (M=4) Tunnel C Facility. The data were obtained at M = 4.0, Re/ft = 0.4- to 6.6-million, to 6.6 x 10 to the 6.6-million, TW/TT =approx. 0.3 to 0.8 at angles of attack of -5 to +5 degrees and -3 to +3 degrees angle of sideslip. The purpose of the tests was to obtain External Tank Interference heating data at higher total temperatures (lower TW/TT) for assessment of the validity of interference heating data previously obtained in the AEDC Tunnel A. A second objective was to obtain data at conditions comparable to STS1-4 flight data.
