Evaluation of Multicomponent Fluoride Glass Candidates for Double Crucible Drawn Optical Fiber.

Abstract

Fluorozirconate and fluorohafnate glass compositions have been investigated as potential candidates for mid-IR transmitting optical communication fiber. Suitable candidates have been identified, and multi-meter lengths of low strength, Teflon clad fiber have been drawn. The preform draw method has been found more suitable than the single crucible draw method. Various bulk fabrication methods have been developed, and small quantities of optical quality glass have ben cast. These glasses have been well characterized in terms of physical properties.
