Ultra Low Loss Optical Fiber Cable Assemblies. Volume 1.

Abstract

This final report describes the development of tactical fiber optic cable assemblies. The effort was to develop a tactically deployable cable capable of a transmission rate of 20 Mb/s over 8 km repeaterless lengths. The optical performance required to meet the requirements is a dispersion of less than 2 ns/km and an attentuation of less than 5 dB/km at 0.85 micrometers combined with connector interface losses of less than 3 dB (1.5 dB at bulkhead receptacle). Experimental results of fiber, cable, and cable assembly testing are reported.
