Decision Feedback Equalizer Test Results for HF Skywave Communications. Design Trade-Offs and Performance Data are Presented for Kalman and LMS-Decision Feedback Equalizers.

Abstract

Simulation results which address the design trade-offs of Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) using the Kalman and LMS algorithms are presented. Test results are given on varying the transmitted reference, equalization loop bandwidth, equalizer tap positioning, and synchronization. The DFE performance on fading multipath channels is compared to switching diversity and the impact of path separation is shown. Performance results are given for both simulated and measured HF channels. Simulation results show that the Kalman DFE performs as well or better than the LMS DFE or parallel tone modems and out performs them when there are multiple fading signal skywave paths. (Author)
