Officer Selection Study

Abstract

The Marine Corps uses a several paper and pencil tests of mental ability as primary selection screens for officers. This study validated two of these tests, the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Electrical (EL) composite of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), against Officer Candidate School (OCS) and The Basic School (TBS) performance measures. The results showed both tests to be valid predictors of performance in TBS. Scores on the operational selection tests were equated with each other. The current SAT and ASVAB minimum qualifying scores were found to be about the same.
