Standardization of Drop Weight Mechanical Properties Tester for Gun Propellants

Abstract

A drop weight impact mechanical properties tester for propellant grains has been developed. The high strain rate device has been standardized with a 7075-T6 aluminum which has a strain rate independent modulus and has been found to give repeatable accurate results. The device is simple to operate and provides direct, simultaneous force and displacement measurements. Results indicate that the device will provide accurate data for high rate compressional testing of gun propellant grains.
