Sensitization of High Density Silver Azide to Stab Initiation

Abstract

The preparation of high density silver azide, bulk density 2.15 g/cc, in a free flowing crystalline form is described. Sensitivity data are given and the ability of both energetic and grit sensitizers to sensitize the material to stab initiation has been assessed. Some of the grit mixes are very susceptible to explosion during pressing. Experimental compositions based on L mix and N.O. L. 130, with LDNR or lead azide/styphnate replaced by silver azide and tetrazene by KHADNBF, were studied and show the potential of developing stab and percussion mixes based on silver azide.
