Program in Marine Physics Applied to Navy Undersea Missions.

Abstract

This final report is a summary of the core program at the Marine Physical Laboratory. The overall core program addresses in a coordinated way the acoustic, hydrodynamic and magnetic environments of the ocean and the opportunities of constraints which knowledge of the environment produces in relation to undersea detection, localization and communication. Projects within these sections interacted among one another through sharing of ideas and technological background within the scientific and engineering staff and through sharing of facilities both ashore and afloat. The core program improved in a correlated way both the basic understanding of oceanic phenomena and the generation and testing of concepts for carrying out sensing and communication tasks in the sea in the most efficient manner.
