Installation Restoration Program. Phase 1. Records Search, Lowry AFB, Colorado

Abstract

The methodology utilized in the Lowry AFB Records Search began with a review of past and present industrial operations conducted at the base. Information was obtained from available records such as shop files and real property files, as well as interviews with 45 past and present base employees from the various operating areas. Concurrent with the base interviews, the applicable Federal, state and local agencies were contacted for pertinent base- related environmental data. The next step in the activity review was to determine the past management practices regarding the use, storage, treatment, and disposal of hazardous materials from the various operations on the base. Included in this part of the activities review was the identification of all known past disposal sites and other possible sources of contamination such as spill areas. A general ground tour of the identified sites were then made by the ES Project Team to gather site-specific information including: (1) visual evidence of environmental stress; (2) the presence of nearby drainage ditches or surface water bodies; and (3) visual inspection of these water bodies for any obvious signs of contamination or leachate migration. A decision was then made, based on all of the above information, whether a potential exists for hazardous material contamination at any of the identified sites using a Decision Tree.
