Manufacturing Technology for High Quality Swept-Culture Growth Quartz.

Abstract

Relatively low impurity alpha-quartz has been grown form the hydroxide mineralizer system with the use of three types of nutrient: converted, special cultured and cultured. The converted nutrient resulted in the lowest total ppm level (2.6) and Al ppm level (0.5) in the as-grown crystals. Special cultured and cultured nutrients resulted in 1.7 ppm and 2.1 ppm of aluminum in crystals grown, respectively, from these nutrients. Infrared Q values ranged from 2.5x10 to the 6th power in these crystals. With respect to rho in the as-grown crystals, a ten minute etching of seeds in 7.0 molal ammonium bifluoride has resulted in the growth of the lowest etch channel density crystals (approx = 135/sq cm).
