Special Course on Subsonic/Transonic Aerodynamic Interference for Aircraft

Abstract

This course was a follow-up to an AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Subsonic/Transonic Configuration Aerodynamics. The emphasis of the course was on the configuration optimization in the transonic regime where both military and commercial aircraft must cruise efficiently and where military aircraft must maneuver in an agile but stable manner. The course material was updated and presented in a more structured fashion emphasizing the fluid dynamic interference mechanisms that are the keys to the optimization. In addition, some aspects of subcritical interference were also covered, including those arising in the takeoff and landing phase of the flight with high lift devices deployed.
