Range Safety Display System Upgrade.

Abstract

The paper discusses replacement of a monochromatic CRT system with a color graphics system. Range Safety's role in the Eastern Space and Missile Center's operations is to minimize the risks to life, health, and property from missile flight. The Range Safety Display System plays an important part in fulfilling this mission because the decision to allow a flight to continue, or to terminate it, is based primarily on the information presented in this display. The increasing complexity of launches has resulted in a corresponding increase in the amount and complexity of information that the Range Safety Officer must absorb in realtime. The existing monochromatic CRT displays are being replaced with a system consisting of more powerful host computers and both high- and medium-resolution color graphics displays. Significant enhancements include improved presentation of data by color, line style, and blink; easier software maintenance; expanded user control of displays; and off-loading many of the tasks now performed in the Central Computer Complex.
