Abstract
Simply states, the purpose of the Metropolitan Washington Area Water Supply Study was to develop, analyze and recommend those alternative measures required to solve the MWA's immediate and long-term water supply problems. The findings of the study are intended as an aid to all levels of water resources managers for the evaluation of implementable, cost-effective and environmentally acceptable means to both manage the existing water supply systems and meet future water supply needs. Recognizing the study's lengthy and complex nature at the outset, the study was designed and managed as a two phased effort. The first phase addressed the immediate short-range water supply problems with the primary goal being to solve those problems through more efficient use of existing water supplies. A Progress Report was published in August 1979 which presented the evaluation of the short-range problems and solutions to the MWA's water supply problems. Since 1979 the study has concentrated on the second phase of the investigation dealing with potential long-range water supply problems. The goal of the study's second phase was to determine the feasibility of providing additional sources of raw water in order to meet long-range term needs.
